Tooro Palace: A Cultural Gem with a Storied History

Tooro, one of Uganda’s traditional kingdoms, has a rich history that dates back to its founding in 1822. The Tooro Kingdom, initially formed by the eldest son of the Omukama of Bunyoro-Kitara, has experienced periods of rebellion, invasions, and restoration. The Tooro Palace stands as a symbol of this kingdom’s resilience and cultural heritage.

1. Foundation and Early Rule: The Tooro Kingdom was established in 1822 after the son of the Omukama of Bunyoro-Kitara rebelled and formed his own kingdom, annexing the southern part of his father’s domain. The kingdom’s initial years were marked by succession disputes and external invasions.
2. Invasion by Buganda: In 1871, Tooro faced an invasion by Buganda, leading to the brief reign of Rukirabasaija Kato Rukidi. However, the people of Tooro rejected his rule, and Nyaika was restored to the throne.
3. Period of Flux: The kingdom experienced internal strife, with short reigns of feuding sons following Nyaika’s rule. From 1880 to 1891, Tooro was absorbed back into Bunyoro-Kitara before regaining independence.
4. Christian Conversion: Under the rule of Rukirabasaija Daudi Kasagama Kyebambe III, the kingdom embraced Christianity. He reigned until 1928 as part of an agreement with the Imperial British East Africa Company.
5. Abolition and Restoration: In 1967, Tooro Kingdom was abolished by Milton Obote. The Tooro Royal Palace, constructed under the reign of Rukirabasaija Sir George David Matthew Kamurasi Rukidi III, fell into disrepair. It was later restored with the support of Muammar Gadhaffi in the early 2000s.
6. Post-Restoration Era: The monarchy was restored in 1993, and the Tooro Palace became an integral part of cultural preservation. Olimi III, the fourth son of Rukidi III, was briefly stripped of his royal title but later restored. Today, Rukidi IV is the reigning king.
