Ndali Vanilla Farm

Discovering Ndali Vanilla Farm: A Flavorful Journey in Western Uganda

Ndali Estate, nestled within the explosion craters of the Ndali Volcanic Field in Western Uganda, offers a captivating agricultural experience, particularly in the realm of vanilla farming. Here, the rich history of the estate intersects with the meticulous cultivation and processing of vanilla, creating a sensory adventure for visitors.

A Legacy of Agriculture

Owned by the Price/Sturdy families, Ndali Estate has a storied history dating back to the 1920s when Major Trevor Price, the English grandfather, ventured into Uganda with the ambitious goal of cultivating tea. The estate, situated in the Kingdom of Toro, initially aimed for tea cultivation, but the alkaline soil led to a shift in plans. Over time, the estate evolved into a 1,000-acre mixed tropical farm.

Vanilla Cultivation and Processing

Ndali Estate stands out for its specialization in exquisite quality Fairtrade vanilla products. The farm grows vanilla pods, and in addition to its own produce, it sources vanilla from other Fairtrade farmers. The entire process, from curing to milling and extraction, takes place on the farm. The result is bulk export to major industries and small batches packaged under the Ndali Vanilla brand for retail.

Guided Tours and Farm Life Experience

Visitors to Ndali Vanilla Farm can embark on guided tours that lead them through a landscape adorned with banana plantations, vanilla plantations, coffee terraces, and various plots of crops like cassava, groundnuts, sorghum, and millet. The journey includes walks around crater rims, providing a picturesque backdrop.

During the visit, you’ll encounter key figures in farm life:

  • Kora, the Head Waragi Man: Amidst heaps of Kisubi bananas, Kora oversees the production of Ndali’s banana gin, locally known as ‘war gin,’ traditionally consumed on the battlefield.
  • Birungi, the Head Cattle Man: Engaged in milking Marg at the cattle shed, Birungi, meaning ‘Good,’ embodies a peaceful and animal-loving presence on the farm. His experiences, including an encounter with a 13-foot python, add to the farm’s narratives.

Intense Flavor and Unique Products

Ndali Vanilla is renowned for its intense flavor that sets it apart from other vanillas. The farm offers Fairtrade organic vanilla powder, vanilla extract, and vanilla pods. The powder, an innovative addition, allows for quick and easy extraction of rich vanilla flavor.
